Privacy and your files

OnScreen records, edits and exports on your computer. Captions are transcribed on your computer too, and so is noise reduction. Your recordings only leave your computer when you share the exported video yourself.

Your projects

Each project is a folder with its recordings inside. They’re kept in Documents/OnScreen/Projects unless you choose another folder. OnScreen saves your work as you edit, so there’s no Save button.

To change the folder:

1. Open Settings ▸ Folders.
2. Under Projects folder, click Choose… and pick a folder.

New recordings go to the new folder. Projects you already have stay where they are, and the Projects list only shows the folder that’s set now: move their folders into the new one to keep seeing them, or click Use default to go back. Click the folder path to open it.

Deleting a project moves it to the trash, so you can restore it from there.

Exported videos

Each export goes where you choose when you save it. The save window starts in your Export folder, which is your Videos folder (Movies on a Mac) unless you change it in Settings ▸ Folders.

Other files

Photos you add as backgrounds are copied into OnScreen’s own data folder, so they keep working if you move or delete the originals. Your settings, your saved defaults and the caption model are kept there too.

What goes online

OnScreen connects to the internet only for these:

• License: when you activate, it sends your license key and your computer’s name to the onscreen.cc license server, and about once a day it checks the key again. Without a connection, OnScreen keeps working for up to 14 days.
• Updates: when it opens and every 6 hours, it asks onscreen.cc whether there’s a new version. It downloads one only when you click Update.
• Caption model: the first time you make captions, you download the Whisper model once, from Hugging Face. After that, captions work without a connection.

Nothing from your recordings, projects or exports is sent.
