Recording
Recording shortcuts
Stop or pause a recording from the keyboard, change those shortcuts, and learn the single-key shortcuts of the editor.
While recording
Two shortcuts work during a recording, even when another app is in front:
- Stop recording: Ctrl + Shift + 2 (on Mac ⌘ + Shift + 2)
- Pause / resume recording: Ctrl + Shift + 1 (on Mac ⌘ + Shift + 1)
To change them:
- Open Settings with the gear button and go to the Shortcuts tab.
- Under While recording, click the shortcut you want to change.
- Press the new combination. It needs Ctrl, Alt or Shift (⌘, ⌥ or Shift on Mac), unless you use a function key such as F9 on its own. Esc cancels.
If another app already uses that combination, the shortcut may not respond. The buttons on the recording bar always work.
In the editor
The editor uses single keys. You can change them in the same tab, under Editor: click a key and press the new one. If another action already uses that key, the two swap.
- Play / pause: Space
- Split at playhead: S
- Add zoom: Z
- Masking mode: M
- Spotlight mode: F
These ones are fixed (on Mac, ⌘ instead of Ctrl):
- Undo: Ctrl + Z. Redo: Ctrl + Shift + Z or Ctrl + Y
- Delete selection: Delete or Backspace
- Move one frame: ← or →. Add Shift to Move one second
- Deselect / exit masking mode: Esc
- Zoom the timeline: Ctrl + mouse wheel
Log your keystrokes
The Keys button on the recording bar (Record keystrokes) saves the keys you press along with the recording. It’s on by default. The editor turns them into a keystroke layer, hidden until you turn on Show keystrokes. On Mac, the first time you record with Keys on, macOS asks for Input Monitoring permission.
Tip: Everything you type is saved with the recording. Turn Keys off before you type a password.
