Video formats

Choose the shape of your video, from 16:9 for YouTube to 9:16 for Reels, TikTok and Shorts, and check vertical videos with the Safe Zone guide.

The format menu is in the middle of the editor’s title bar. The format applies to the whole video, and you can switch it at any time: your edits stay as they are.

Which format to use

  • 16:9: YouTube, websites and presentations. New projects start here.
  • 9:16: Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts.
  • 4:5 and 1:1: feed posts on Instagram, Facebook or LinkedIn, where they take up more of the screen than a wide video.
  • 5:4, 4:3 and 3:4: when a site or a template asks for one of those shapes.
  • Auto: the shape of your first clip’s recording, after any crop.

Vertical and narrow formats

When the frame is much narrower than your recording, like 9:16 from a widescreen display, OnScreen fills the frame instead of shrinking the recording into a strip. The view follows your activity: it holds still on the area you’re working in and moves when your work moves somewhere else. Your zooms still play on top.

This comes from the Framing setting in the Screen recording panel. To show the whole recording with the background around it, set it to Fit. See Background and style.

Safe Zone

On TikTok, Reels and Shorts, the app’s buttons, the post’s text and the account name cover the edges of the video. In 9:16 and 3:4, a Safe Zone button appears next to the format menu. Turn it on to shade those edges in red, and keep text and important details inside the clear area.

It’s one guide that works for all three apps, and it only shows in the preview: it never appears in the exported video. When the frame is filled, OnScreen also centers your activity in that clear area, even with the guide off.

Size when you export

The resolution you pick when exporting is the short side of the video: 1080p gives 1920 × 1080 in 16:9 and 1080 × 1920 in 9:16.

Next step

Export your video.
